From glennallenhoward at yahoo.com Sat Dec 17 14:55:01 2011 From: glennallenhoward at yahoo.com (Glenn Allen Howard) Date: Sat, 17 Dec 2011 14:55:01 -0800 Subject: Glenn's Picks live in person Sunday 12.18.11 at 4:30, and some fine film clips of Link Wray, Fanny Brice and early Woody Allen Message-ID: It?s been much more than a month and a mouthful of Sundaes since I sent out a new Glenn?s Picks, and just for the record (s), this ain?t it. I just wanted you to know that I?m about 80% done with GP #8, which should show up in your mailbox sometime in the first 13 or 14 months of 2012, if not before, but certainly well before the very next ?end of the world? tscenario doesn?t happen. Mayan (the farce) be with you. Meanwhile, I finally found some radical film clips I?ve been trolling for since day one of GP, which recently got caught in up in the gigglely. Googlely, wide weird world of weberspace-cadetism, so I?m gonna whip ?em onya right now with minimal verbage. But first, you might want to catch a Glenn?s Picks Loose Wig lecture / platter party tomorrow. Here?s an engraved invitation with the details: Come on and hear Glenn Allen Howard, the Founder and Curator of The American Musical Heritage Foundation?a phonograph record library of over 650,000 LPs, 78s, 45s, cylinders and related items play endorphin?releasing selections from the still unissued compilation of Yiddish-American recordings from the 1920s through the 1950s, ?Kosher Katz and Kittens,? which is subtitled ?Glenn?s Chosen Records by God?s Chosen People.? He will explain for the first time on any stage his own WASP?s?eye view why the predominant ethnic influence on the total spectrum of American Musical culture is at least 51% Jewish. Enjoy an explosive mazel tov cocktail of awesome analog ear candy from an outlaw musicologist who built his own world-class record archive over the last half century. Link Wray and his Wraymen (1958) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l0c9wFoT1I Here?s a hot and until just recently missing ?link? to one of the baddest-ass rock ?n? roller guitarists of the 1950s. He was one of the edgier rockabilly cats who barely edged his way onto this TV show right before this ass-holesome parasitic host snuffed out any semblance of real rock ?n? roll and turned the show over completely to the terminally ?wholesome,? mostly Italian-American, mob-sponsored teen idols the adults and authority figures found far preferable to Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. Even though the far from fey Wray was white and his other bandmates could almost pass for ?clean cut,? he spelled eminent danger to the post-war parental units. Rockabilly?s days were almost over by the time this single peaked in January of 1959. His first hit, the guitar instrumental ?Rumble,? got banned from radio play in many markets just for the title, which referred to a teenage gang fight. I got to hang with him in the early 70s when he was in SF making a record with Jerry Garcia and some of the members of the classic line up of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, the real inventors of Outlaw Country Music . ?Cooking Breakfast for the One I Love? Fanny Brice (1930) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlyzFJwiBv8 Here?s a sweet very vintage piece of Fanny footage, even if her oatmeal is sprinkled with Lux soap. ?Cooking Breakfast for the One I Love? Fanny Brice The original 78 (1930) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFzJJpiXUog The original record has a snappier band, fuller sound and some different lyrics. Woody Allen on the Jack Paar Show (1962) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in0X7vOYVjU Stand up comedy Woody Allen (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuCufsHa8wU On the Dean Martin Show (1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaIhZnkErwo Here?s three early clips that illustrate the evolution of the Woodman?s comedy act in the 1960s. He waxed 3 LPs of hilarious stand up comedy in the sixties and after all these years, they still stand up. All three albums are essential if you wanna make sense of his sense of humor.
